“As a longtime health care leader and a major regional birthing center, we are incredibly proud of this recognition and what it signifies about the quality and experience expecting mothers receive under our care,” said David Vandenberg, M.D., chief medical officer of Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Trinity Health Livingston about being named among the list. “Giving birth is not only a medical event, but one of the most significant and sacred life events, which is why we strive to deliver a high-quality experience on both fronts.”
How hospitals were selected
The list was compiled using three factors:
- Hospital quality metrics on maternal care from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), AHA Annual Survey of Hospitals Database, Joint Commission, American Nurses Credentialing Center, Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) and Baby-Friendly USA (BFUSA).
- Results from hospital surveys about the patient experience, including the topics of cleanliness of the hospital, communication of the nurses/doctors, care transition, communication about medicines, discharge information, quietness, and staff responsiveness.
- A nationwide online survey that hospital managers and medical professionals were invited to take. They were asked to recommend the top maternity hospital and rank them from 1-10 in the following areas: Perinatal care, operative obstetrics, patient education & counseling, accommodation & service, and nurse & midwife staffing. They couldn’t recommend their own employer.
