Digital access coming this summer

A new way to access your Social Security number will soon be available, the Social Security Administration announced.

“My Social Security” account holders will have secure digital access to their Social Security number (SSN), in a move to provide a more accessible alternative to the physical card.

“We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner, in a release. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner.”

This comes after the administration partially backtracked on a plan that would require new and existing beneficiaries to travel to a Social Security field office to verify their identity.

When will I get digital access to my SSN?

The federal agency didn’t release a specific launch date for this new feature, but said it will be available in early summer.

How do I get digital access work?

You must have a “my Social Security account” to access your SSN on mobile devices.

What this means

Having digital access will let people see their Social Security numbers for reasons outside of Social Security matters, according to the release.

It will allow people who have forgotten their SSN or misplaced their cards to securely view their number on the portal, reducing the need for in-person visits and having to wait to receive cards in the mail.

“This digital feature not only streamlines the process for those who need their SSN but also reinforces our dedication to protecting sensitive information,” the agency said in the release. “By providing a secure digital option, SSA aims to reduce the risk of lost or stolen cards and enhance the overall user experience.”

Replacing Social Security cards

If you need your Social Security number before digital access becomes available, you can replace your card.

The agency said in most cases, a physical card isn’t necessary, and you might not need to replace the card if you know your SSN.
