‘Take our thoughts into consideration’: Kids join protest against project near playground in Detroit

They’re worried about where the vent would be placed right next to the playground

DETROIT – A Detroit community is pushing back against a decision that could impact their green spaces and playground.

Residents at the Mies Condominium Complex near Lafayette Park say Detroit Thermal wants to build a steam vent in their community.

They’re worried about where the vent would be placed right next to the playground.

We talked to some kids who frequent the playground, and they’re teaming up to make signs and protest the project.

“We really care about this space and we really want to have it and we want to have it for the younger kids that comes after us,” said Isaac. “This is a really important spot for us, and please take our thoughts into consideration.”

“I feel like the kids enjoy it a lot,” said Whitney. “The tree is our favorite climbing spot, and it could get ripped if we don’t stop.”

City leaders held an informational meeting Monday (April 28) afternoon after they received dozens of emails and calls about this project.

They say they plan to reach out to Detroit Thermal to get answers on questions raised by the community.

They plan to have another community meeting at a later date.
