EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University Athletic Director Alan Haller is leaving the college after more than three years.
His departure was announced by the university Thursday, May 1.

Haller was appointed as vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics in September 2021. Under his leadership, men’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s gymnastics, men’s ice hockey and women’s cross country, have secured Big Ten championships.
Additionally, Spartan athletes have excelled academically during his tenure, achieving the highest cumulative GPA in the athletic department’s history with a 3.4324 in 2024.
Haller’s last day at the university will be May 11. In the interim, Deputy Athletic Director Jennifer Smith and men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo will serve as acting athletic directors while President Kevin M. Guskiewicz conducts a search for a permanent director.
“I’m grateful for Alan’s leadership since I joined the university and appreciate the success our programs have seen under his leadership,” Guskiewicz said. “He is deeply committed to this university and has led with honesty and integrity.”
