SAGINAW, Mich. – A Saginaw County woman’s pet rabbits multiplied into an overwhelming amount and had to call for help. She purchased a few rabbits as pets for her children but soon learned more than 65 of them were occupying her home.

Saginaw County Animal Care & Control (SCACC) responded to the house on April 16 after the woman found herself unable to control their rapid breeding. SCCAC says she initially estimated there were 50 rabbits on her property.

The officers worked with the resident to collect the rabbits, which ended up numbering more than 65 adults and kits. That figure is still rising as many of the female rabbits were pregnant and have been delivering new bunnies daily.

According to SCACC, the woman attempted to separate the rabbits in her basement to prevent further breeding. However, the rabbits began chewing through drywall and other materials, making it impossible to contain them. Many of the rabbits required immediate medical attention for fungal infections, injuries to their eyes and ears, and essential grooming such as nail trims.

The Jackson County Animal Control assisted by taking some of the rabbits into their care. The rabbits are available for placement with MDARD-approved shelters and rescues. They cannot be adopted into homes until they are sprayed or neutered, cleared of disease and are healthy.
