ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Glass artists from around the world are showcasing their work at the Habatat Gallery for the 53rd Annual International Glass Art Show.
Glass53 features rare and beautiful pieces, along with up-and-coming artists to watch.
For art lovers, the exhibition is hailed as the ultimate glass art experience.
The show features more than 400 pieces of fine art from around the globe and is held inside what’s considered to be the oldest and largest contemporary glass gallery in the world, located in Royal Oak.
Contemporary glass art is vibrant, innovative, bold, yet delicate.
It’s one thing to see a picture of glass art.
“But you have you seen it as a beautiful sculpture that changes with light as you move around the room?” asked Aaron Schey, co-owner of Habatat Gallery.
Inside Habatat Gallery, artists test the boundaries of their imaginations.
Artist Michael Janis focuses on transformation and identity in his work. The Washington, D.C.-based artist makes it a point to visit Metro Detroit whenever possible.
“There is a strong vibe here, and a lot about Detroit is that it’s accessible. The art is something you can walk up to. The vibe here is that it’s not so high-brow that you feel like you’re just standing up and looking at it – you’re actually a part of it,” Janis says.
The exhibition’s grand opening is May 3 at 8 p.m. at Habatat Gallery. It’s free admission but spectators are encouraged to register online.
At last check, it received over a thousand registrants, according to Schey.
A live glass blowing demonstration is scheduled beforehand at 6 p.m. at Axiom Glass located at 4706 Delemere Blvd. in Royal Oak.
Glass53 runs for a few weeks, but the best time to see the pieces is now before everything is shipped off to buyers. For more information, click here.
