DETROIT – Multiple law enforcement agencies launched a major crackdown on Wednesday, targeting prostitution, drug activity, and other criminal behavior along a troubled stretch of John R Street between 6 Mile Road and 8 Mile Road in Detroit.

Operation John R Resolved brings together officers from the Detroit Police Department’s 11th and 12th precincts, the department’s Vice Unit, Highland Park police, and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in a coordinated effort to address persistent community complaints.

“This is a unifying effort to address the area, down near John R, McNichols. Really, that John R corridor, going all the way up to 8 Mile,” said Commander Michael Chambers of DPD’s 11th Precinct.

The initiative extends beyond traditional law enforcement, incorporating city building inspectors, animal control officers, and health department officials to address the area’s various quality-of-life issues.

“We’re going to enforce the law. We’re going to make arrests. We’re also going to provide those individuals suffering from substance use disorder, address some of the narcotics concerns that are plaguing this area,” said Captain Derrick Griffin of DPD’s 11th Precinct.

Residents along the corridor have reported numerous ongoing issues, including prostitution, drug activity, aggressive dogs, and dangerous speeding.

One neighborhood resident, who witnessed the operation’s launch, reported seeing “13, 14, 15 police cars,” including unmarked vehicles, demonstrating the significant scale of the enforcement effort.

“I think it’s wonderful,” the neighbor said. “I think it needs to be done. It should have been done a long time ago. And, hopefully, it makes everyone feel safe.”

Griffin emphasized the department’s dedication to creating lasting positive change in the area.

“I’m excited, today, to get out there to try to impact the community in a positive way. And brings some relief to the people that have been living in this community under siege by this type of activity,” Griffin said.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that Operation John R Resolved isn’t a one-time event but will continue with regular enforcement actions throughout the year.
