ROMULUS, Mich. – What will happen if you show up to Detroit Metro Airport now without an ID that’s REAL ID compliant?
The Department of Homeland Security implemented its REAL ID enforcement at TSA checkpoints on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
Officials said most travelers won’t notice a difference because 81% of people are already REAL ID compliant.
TSA doesn’t anticipate wait times or screening will be affected, especially for travelers who have their REAL ID, passport, or another acceptable form of ID.
But what will happen if you show up to a TSA checkpoint with a state-issued ID that’s not REAL ID compliant? No, you won’t be turned away or kicked out of the airport.
You might have to go through more screening than others, though.
“Passengers (without REAL ID) will be notified of their non-compliance and may be directed to a separate area to receive additional screening," a Department of Homeland Security release says.
TSA agents expect the number of REAL ID copmliant passengers to steadily increase.
There will be additional screening measures in the future for those who are not REAL ID compliant, "until it is no longer considered a security vulnerability," officials said.
“REAL ID helps ensure that travelers are who they say they are and prevents fraud by criminals, terrorists, and illegal aliens,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said. “Enforcing federal law will help keep American travelers safe.”
