REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A student is recovering after shots were fired on a bus outside a high school in Redford Township.
Local 4 was some of the first on the scene after those shots rang out just before 3 p.m. at Thurston High School.
The school is located off I-96 near Inkster Road and Beech Daly. The student involved is listed in stable condition.
There was a sign that read buses only 7 a.m.- 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. - 3 p.m in the lane where the bus comes to pick up the students after school.
When the bus pulled up on Wednesday (May 7), students got on, and at least one shot was fired.

“It’s very alarming,” said Shalada Chambers. “It saddens me because my daughter, she’s a junior here.”
Chambers was one of many worried parents at pick-up on Wednesday.
Reford Township police said there was an after-school shooting on the school bus parked just outside the front doors of Thurston High School.
Chambers found out about it through a parent Facebook group.
“They’re outraged and they just want our kids to be safe,” Chambers said.
Redford Township police said the student who was shot was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
The gun was recovered, and police said there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Chambers expressed relief that her daughter had an after-school class and wasn’t on the bus.
“I was so happy I was almost in tears, seriously. She could have been on the bus, and I don’t know if that’s the bus, that’s what I’m trying to find out if that’s the one she normally rides,” Chambers said.
According to the superintendent, the school will be closed on May 8, 2025, to allow its students to recover and heal.
There are many questions tonight about who fired that gun. The police chief says the investigation is ongoing, and they will have an update on Thursday.
