NEWBERRY, Mich. – A Michigan man is facing up to life in prison after he allegedly abused a 5-week-old baby last year, officials said.
Roy Metcalf, 22, of Newberry, was arraigned on two counts of first-degree child abuse in 92nd District Court on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office. Newberry is located within Luce County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
In June 2024, workers at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Kent County alerted Children’s Protective Services of suspected abuse after providing care to an injured 5-week-old baby.
The mother and father, Roy Metcalf, first brought the baby to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Luce County before they were transferred to Munson Medical Center in Grand Traverse County and then to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
The 5-week-old’s injuries included a fractured femur and subdural hemorrhaging. He was charged with a child abuse count for each injury.
Metcalf was given a personal bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
“Cases of child abuse are deeply disturbing and heartbreaking, especially when they involve a child as young as five weeks old,” Nessel said. “My office remains committed to prosecuting those who would harm our most innocent and vulnerable to the fullest extent of the law.”
