Oakland County man charged for allegedly sexually assaulting children under his care

Police chief: Man used to be an educator in Kansas, Illinois, Georgia

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A Southfield man was arrested and charged for allegedly sexually assaulting children, and the police chief believes there may be more victims.

Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren announced that Lawrence Miles, 69, was arrested and charged for sexually assaulting a boy and a girl that were under 10 years old.

Out of respect for the family, Barren said during a press conference on May 9 that he will not disclose the graphic details of the sexual assaults and the ages of the children.

Barren said Miles is a family member of the young children and were watching them during the alleged sexual assaults.

The investigation began on May 5, after the young boy told his parents that his sister was touched inappropriately by Miles.

Barren said the boy and girl were under Miles’ care and the daughter was sexually assaulted on May 3, 2025.

Miles was arrested on May 7. He was charged with three counts of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and two counts of Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. He was denied bond.

“Be mindful of who you allow to watch your children,” said Barren.

Miles allegedly told the children not to tell anyone about the assaults, or they wouldn’t be able to come over again.

“This pedophile did not have a criminal history,” Barren added.

He said Miles used to be an educator in Kansas, Illinois and Georgia, so he believes there could be more victims.

“We’re going to hold him accountable,” he said.

Barren called the children courageous and strong for coming forward to their parents.

He is expected to appear in court on May 22, 2025.
