How to secure your home while working outside as thefts rise in warmer weather

104,000 reports of larceny in 2022 alone

As warmer weather encourages more outdoor activities, homeowners may find themselves spending more time in the garden or playing with kids in the yard. However, this is also the time when thieves are on the lookout for opportunities. The FBI reports that larceny and theft are particularly common during this season.

When you get something stolen, especially from inside your garage or car, it can be really rattling. It’s happened to me before, and I remember just having this feeling of being so violated. And I know I’m not alone.

In 2022, there were 104,000 reports of larceny, with over $100,000 worth of items reported stolen. Out of those reports, only 11,000 people were charged.

As the weather warms up, it’s essential to protect your valuables while enjoying outdoor activities.

Local 4’s crime and safety expert, Darnell Blackburn, emphasized the importance of home security.

“Sometimes you know your neighbors, and sometimes you don’t, so we have a false sense of security,” said Blackburn. “Always think about the security of your home and your valuables.”

We visited one of Local 4’s producers’ homes to demonstrate some practical tips for securing outdoor spaces.

“First thing, this door is unsecure,” Blackburn noted as they approached the garage. “We just randomly walked up to an unsecure garage. We need to find a way to secure this garage so nobody just comes and takes your valuables.”

As we prepared to do some yard work, Blackburn reminded viewers of the importance of being aware of their surroundings. “When you get to the back of this garage, you can’t see anything that’s going on in front of the house. Your best bet is to close the garage door because it makes it a lot less likely that someone will come and steal all the valuables.”

He also advised homeowners to keep all doors locked, even when they are home. “Make sure the doors to your house are locked as well, so nobody can just come in and get your property and your valuables. Just always keep your head on a swivel and be mindful.”

As homeowners dive into spring cleaning and yard work, it’s crucial to stay vigilant and protect against potential theft.
