ANN ARBOR, Mich. – With warmer weather approaching, parents often find themselves reaching for last year’s summer clothes, only to realize their children have outgrown most items. As many parents know, buying a new wardrobe every year can be expensive.
At Once Upon a Child in Ann Arbor, parents can save money on the clothes their kids need while also making money by selling gently used items.
Owner Marcie Van Black emphasizes the affordability of their offerings.
“For example, shirts range anywhere from $2.50 to $5.50,” she said. “Pants and shorts are priced from $3.50 to $6.50, so you can get a whole outfit for around $10.”
Van Black notes that she sees three types of customers shopping at her store.
“Some are looking for good bargains, others love the recycling aspect of a resale store, and some are trying to make ends meet with limited clothing budgets,” she said.
Frequent customer Debra Meier appreciates the experience of shopping at Once Upon a Child, especially as she shops for her seven grandchildren.
“I just love sharing this experience with them,” Meier said.
She often brings her grandchildren to the store when they are ready to pass along items they no longer use or want.
“They get to choose whatever they would like to give back, and they can use the money towards buying new stuff here,” she added.
This practice keeps many customers returning, as they can bring in gently used items and receive cash on the spot. Meier believes this approach teaches her grandchildren to take good care of their belongings while also reducing clutter at home.
“It helps keep things flowing, and I don’t stock up a lot of stuff at home. It’s just nice sharing with other children,” she said.
Van Black mentions that they buy items based on brand, style, demand, and condition, catering to sizes from preemie to youth 20. The store collects items for every season.
“If you’re trying to clean out the closets and get rid of winter clothes that have been outgrown, we’re buying that now,” she said. “We also buy Halloween costumes, Christmas outfits, and even Easter attire.”
Once Upon a Child is just one option among many resale and consignment shops, including other locations throughout Metro Detroit.
