Detroit launches $5.4M ‘Arts Alleys’ project to transform urban spaces

43 artists were selected to create murals and installations across 9 locations

DETROIT – A group of local artists is breathing new life into Detroit‘s urban landscape as part of an ambitious initiative to transform neighborhood alleys into vibrant community spaces.

The city selected 43 local artists to create murals and installations across nine locations designated as Detroit’s new Arts Alleys.

“They’re going to be our outdoor museums, but they’re also going to be outdoor community centers, outdoor picnic centers, outdoor wellness centers,” said Rochelle Riley, Detroit’s Director of Arts and Culture.

The $5.4 million project aims to reimagine traditionally overlooked spaces while fostering community engagement through public art.

Among the selected artists, Trae Isaac is already making his mark in Southwest Detroit, creating a mural next to the Roberto Clemente Recreation Center in the Bagley Alley.

“A lot of the alleys in the city are blighted, dilapidated, a little run down,” Isaac said. “However, through this program and similar programs to it, we’ve been able to revitalize them and make them more vibrant using our artwork and different mediums of creativity.”

The initiative goes beyond mere beautification. Artists Vito Valdez and Christine Bossler, who have collaborated for over 20 years, are crafting a mosaic using stone, metal, pottery, and glass in the Bagley Arts Alley. Their work emphasizes community engagement, partnering with local families and businesses to create meaningful connections.

“The other part to this would be community engagement with the families that are up and down and through the alley here,” Valdez said. “We’re also partnering with some of the businesses here.”

In Northeast Detroit, artist Jennifer Maples is working on an affirmation piece along the Burrell Trail at The Alkebu-Ian Village Alley, focusing on inspiring young people through positive messaging.

“The piece that I’m creating is going to be an affirmation piece that’s going to have a lot of different, positive words surrounding it,” Maples said. “That’s kind of my signature right now.”

The Arts Alleys initiative represents a significant investment in Detroit’s neighborhoods. Each location is carefully selected to maximize community impact.

The project includes pedestrian-friendly amenities, transforming these spaces into hubs of creativity and community gathering.

The official openings of the Arts Alleys will take place every weekend in June, showcasing the completed installations to the public.
