One of the largest flower, plant shows takes place at Eastern Market

Eastern Market hosts Flower Tuesday markets in May

DETROIT – Michiganders from across the state flocked to the city where nothing signifies spring more than a visit to Eastern Market for Flower Day.

Every aisle offers a pathway to a beautiful yard.

Tens of thousands of people couldn’t think of a better way to spend their Sunday than at what’s considered one of the largest flower and plant shows in the country.

“I’m looking for perennials because I’m tired of putting flowers down every year,” said Roselyn Simmons from Eastpointe. “You know, I’m not a spring chicken anymore,” she added with a laugh.

This decades-long tradition is spearheaded by the market and the Metro Detroit Flower Growers Association, featuring a selection of flowers, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, and shrubs grown by top regional growers. With wagons in hand, attendees are eager to make their purchases.

“I think they just think of fun,” said Laura Gibson of Eastern Market. “They think of a beautiful day to come and enjoy the city. To come to downtown Detroit to start the season off right.”

Since 1967, Flower Day has blossomed across generations. For many shoppers, creating a beautiful yard usually means a stop at one of these sheds, where the best of Mother Nature awaits.

If you missed the excitement, Eastern Market is hosting Flower Tuesday Markets in May from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Sheds 5 and 6.

Additionally, vendor offerings will be available daily in Shed 6 from Mother’s Day through Father’s Day, with extra plant selections featured during Saturday Markets throughout the season.
