Police investigate fatal shooting, crash on Detroit’s west side

Police probe potential link between crash and shooting

DETROIT – Police are investigating to see if a deadly shooting and rollover crash on Detroit’s west side are connected.

As of noon, Monday, May 19, the scene remains active near 7 Mile and Greenfield roads.

Police said they received a 911 call regarding a shooting inside a home at about 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Clarita Avenue and Winthrop Street. When they arrived at the scene, they found a man in his 20s who had been shot. First responders attempted life-saving aid, but the man died at the scene.

Police do not believe the shooting was random and that the victim was targeted.

A crash happened at about the same time, about a block away. Police said a vehicle rolled over after it was struck by another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle that rolled over is unrelated to the shooting and is expected to be OK.

While police are investigating whether the vehicle that struck them may be connected to the shooting, they are still working to gather more concrete information.

A person of interest has been detained, but a suspect has not officially been identified or taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-1200.
