Over 300 SE Michigan nursing home workers go on strike. Here’s why

Healthcare workers at five nursing facilities in Southeast Michigan are on a 24-hour strike.

More than 300 SEIU healthcare workers walked off the job at 6 a.m. on May 20, 2025.

The union said they want increased wages, increased sick time and better health insurance.

The average hourly pay for an SEIU union nurse in Michigan is more than $33 an hour, with the top pay range at more than $56 an hour.

Middlebelt Road near 8 Mile in Livonia-Farmington Hills border remains closed due to chemical spill

A stretch of Middlebelt Road in Oakland County remains closed early Tuesday morning following a chemical spill.

A hazmat team responded to an acid leak from a tractor-trailer Monday evening, which shut down the Livonia/Farmington Hills border.

It happened on May 19 at around 5 p.m., and the Farmington Hills Fire Department responded to the tractor-trailer leaking ferric chloride onto the road.

Royal Oak housing plan sparks fears over future of single-family neighborhoods

Royal Oak City Council unanimously approved a resolution to adopt the city’s new Master Plan around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The city of Royal Oak was initially contemplating a significant change to its housing policy that some residents believe could threaten single-family neighborhoods during a meeting Monday night.
