Roseville man pleads no contest to manslaughter in roommate’s death

Man will be sentenced on June 24 at 9:30 a.m.

On Jan. 31, 2024, Newsome and Mitchell got into a physical altercation at a group home in Roseville, which they shared with other roommates.

One of their roommates witnessed the fight between Newsome and Mitchell and called the Roseville Police Department, which dispatched officers to the location.

Upon arrival, Roseville police found Mitchell bleeding and bruised in an unconscious condition on the floor of the house as a result of being beaten by Newsome.

The Roseville Fire Department was called to the scene, where they attempted to resuscitate Mitchell with CPR, but were unable to do so.

Mitchell was pronounced dead by a doctor from Ascension Macomb Hospital, and the Medical Examiner was subsequently called to remove the body of the 72-year-old man.

Roseville Police arrested Newsome at the home, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Following a warrant request by the Roseville Police, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Newsome with homicide, second-degree murder.

On May 20, 2025, Newsome pleaded no contest during a jury trial before the 16th Judicial Circuit Court to manslaughter with a sentence agreement of five to 15 years.

Newsome will be sentenced on June 24, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.
