‘We just jumped out the window’: Children barely escape after truck slams into Oakland County living room

Crash occurred on May 17, 2025 in Pontiac

PONTIAC, Mich. – Three kids in Oakland County narrowly escaped after a truck crashed into their living room.

The crash happened around 12:20 a.m. Saturday (May 17) on Firelite Lane near Cherry Hill Drive in Pontiac.

Police said the driver of the truck crashed through the front door and the front window of the apartment, scattering debris and the contents of the living room.

The children suffered minor scrapes, escaping out the window.

“We felt all this stuff falling on us, and then he pulled them out, and then we just jumped out the window,” 13-year-old Heaven Bennett said.

Bennett and her two brothers, ages 10 and 11, were with her when it happened.

“We had an air conditioning (unit) in the window, and we had kicked it out and climbed through the window,” 11-year-old Dionel Bennett said.

Bennett’s stepdad said they have moved to a neighboring apartment unit.

“Nobody wants to go back there,” Markeise Parker said.

According to police, the driver of the truck tried to run away, but neighbors held her down until police arrived.

“Next thing I know, she was trying to reverse out of the apartment… that was kind of crazy,” neighbor Mya Edwards said.

Police said the driver, a 36-year-old woman from Pontiac, was arrested for suspected drunk driving and was released pending toxicology results.
