Young hero: Brave student lauded for taking action after finding loaded gun near school in Detroit

The boy says he knew he had to do something to protect his school

DETROIT – A Detroit seventh grader was honored after he found a loaded gun near his school and did the right thing.

It happened when Carter Obie-Hawkins was walking to school at Detroit Service Learning Academy.

When he got close to campus, he looked down and saw a loaded 40-caliber handgun lying on the ground.

The seventh grader didn’t panic, though. Without hesitation, he went to school security to alert them of what he had found.

The boy says he knew he had to do something to protect his school.

“Kids aren’t supposed to see guns at all,” said Obie-Hawkins. “They’re not supposed to touch them. And if you’re a parent out there, I just want to say, ‘Keep your kids away from guns.’”

School officials said this shows the importance of teaching gun safety to kids and why, if you see something wrong, you should always say something.
