Frustration grows in Hamtramck as FBI investigates broader allegations beyond police chief

The mayor, however, is hoping for a fuller investigation before any disciplinary action is taken

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Many are patiently waiting to see what decision Hamtramck officials will make regarding the allegations made against the chief of police, who has now been suspended.

“It ain’t fair at all, honestly. If you actually look into it, it ain’t fair,” said Hamtramck resident Abraham Algohin.

Local 4 showed you the turmoil surrounding the last time a discussion was held between Mayor Amer Ghalib and City Manager Max Garbarino.

Garbarino suspended Hamtramck police Chief Jamiel Altaheri after allegations of misconduct that seemingly came out of nowhere.

“If the people are innocent, they’ll come back, simple as that. If they’re not, they’ll get terminated,” said Garbarino.

The mayor, however, is hoping for a fuller investigation before any disciplinary action is taken.

Local 4 has also been informed that the FBI has become involved in allegations that seem to extend even farther than just the police chief.

“My name was mentioned in those allegations in one section that I’m 100% sure it’s a lie,” said Ghalib

While many await the outcome of the next meeting, some simply want the mayor and city manager to work together more efficiently.

“You know. It’s a lose-lose situation, honestly. That’s how I’m looking at it,” Abraham said.

Best believe we will be there with a camera inside the meeting.
