DETROIT – Less than a year after reopening to the public, the Michigan Central Station, which has evolved into a meeting space, innovation hub, and tech hub, will soon add a new title: Luxury hotel.
“Lots of people say, you know, ‘Are you going to ask us? Are you going to make it?’ This could be the most luxurious hotel in Detroit,” Josh Sirefman, Michigan Central’s CEO, said. “And what we really wanted was actually accessible luxury.”
Michigan Central made the official announcement Monday (June 2) morning that they will open a NoMad hotel on the station’s 14th-18th floors.
NoMad is an upscale hotel brand that’s affiliated with Hilton, and the plan is to open a 180-room hotel, including 30 suites on the building’s upper floors overlooking the city.
This will also mark the first time the 112-year-old building’s upper floors have been used.
It’s the latest phase of the massive restoration that began when Ford Motor Company acquired the once-dilapidated building in 2018.
It’s since become a sprawling campus with the additions of the Factory, Newlab, and the Mobility Hub.
“We’ve had programming, where we get the public, and all the time, just been all these different dimensions, and you’re starting to see Michigan Central become this very unique destination and hive of activity,” Sirefman said.
The NoMad will also feature a restaurant as well as a bar and lounge on the ground floor, along with a “wellness” space for guests on the third floor.
It will be among a number of new nomads opening worldwide, including Turks & Caicos, Egypt, Singapore, and India, in addition to the current ones in New York and London.
Sirefman says this is the latest phase of the historic building’s evolution.
“For now, we just want to keep building that critical mass. And it’s, you know, it’s become this driver for growth or the innovation economy in Detroit and the region, and we just want to keep doubling down on that.”
The NoMad hotel is slated to open early in 2027.
