41-year-old man killed by Shelby Township police during traffic stop pursuit

Police said the man pointed a gun at them during the pursuit

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. โ€“ Shelby Township police officers killed a 41-year-old man from Troy during a traffic stop pursuit.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (June 3) at 3:17 p.m. when police conducted a traffic stop on a white Caravan in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and 22 Mile Road.

Officials said during the course of the traffic stop, the 41-year-old man exited the Caravan and fled southbound on foot.

Police said they pursued the man, leading them to go behind a business in the area.

Officials said the officers gave commands to the man to stop before deploying a taser.

Police said the man continued to flee from the officers before he produced a gun.

Officials said they gave several verbal commands to drop the gun before firing and striking him.

The 41-year-old man was taken to a Metro Detroit hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police said the man was later identified at the hospital; however, his name will not be released at this time.

By department policy, the officer was placed on administrative leave, and the entire investigation will be turned over to the Macomb County Sheriffโ€™s Office.
