Residents protest hazardous waste expansion at Belleville Town Hall

As you might imagine, that’s not sitting well with many residents of the area

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – People gathered in Belleville to express their views on a proposal to expand a hazardous waste landfill.

The operator of Wayne Disposal in Van Buren Township is requesting an expansion of its hazardous waste capacity from 22.5 million cubic yards to approximately 27.5 million cubic yards.

As you might imagine, that’s not sitting well with many residents of the area.

And on Monday (June 2) night in Belleville, there was a community meeting for people to protest and share their concerns with lawmakers peacefully.

Many in attendance were part of a group called “Michigan Against Atomic Waste.”

“We came together as a community, and we started uncovering pieces of information, which, believe it or not, was difficult to grasp, and we decided not to let go,” said Michigan Against Atomic Waste Founder Jessica Peterson. “This does not belong in our state. We will not continue to let this happen, and as you can see, we are informed now, and we’re doing something about it.”

State representatives Darren Camilleri and Reggie Miller were at the meeting.

They say they’re working to get a bill through the Senate that would address the lack of state regulation regarding hazardous waste disposal.
