MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A former Macomb County Sheriff’s deputy will see jail time after being captured on video slapping a teenager.
In April, Derek Reed pleaded no contest to willful failure to uphold the law and assault and battery. A child abuse charge was dropped in the plea agreement.
The charges stem from a 2023 arrest when Reed, then a Macomb County deputy sheriff, slapped and assaulted a 14-year-old who was being transported in Reed’s patrol car to the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center in Mount Clemens.
The teen was handcuffed behind his back at the time. Video of the assault was captured on bodycam and Reed was terminated from the sheriff’s department.
On Monday, June 16, Reed was sentenced to 45 days in jail and 18 months of probation.
