DETROIT – A driver with a history of reckless driving is now charged in a deadly crash on Detroit’s west side.
Court records show Dwayne Proctor was going 105 miles per hour when he slammed into another vehicle at Grand River Avenue and Telegraph Road. He reportedly ran a red light and hit a vehicle with two women inside.
Video from witnesses captured the shocking scene after the crash as first responders worked to save the two victims trapped inside their car. A 68-year-old woman was killed and a 44-year-old woman was critically injured.
Surveillance video from a nearby business caught the moment the crash happened, showing smoke exploding from both vehicles.
The driver behind the wheel was Dwayne Darrel Proctor. He was arraigned in court this week, appearing virtually from the hospital.
Proctor has injuries, including multiple spinal fractures and a collapsed lung. Court records show a four-year-old was in the car with him at the time of the crash but did not have serious injuries. Officers reported smelling alcohol on Proctor, and a toxicology report is pending.
Proctor’s criminal history shows he has a record of speeding. Most recently, in February, he was charged with reckless driving and pleaded down to drag racing. In April, he was charged with driving with a suspended license, and last month he was charged with careless driving.
The judge denied him a personal bond, citing his previous record.
“He has a drinking, either drinking or narcotics conviction, which resulted in an accident from 2018. Not only that, the allegations are that he was going well past the speed limit. This court does find Mr. Proctor to be a danger,” the judge stated.
Proctor is being held on a $500,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 25.
