LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State Police are investigating the situation surrounding musician Ted Nugent, who brought a gun into the State Capitol in Lansing.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (June 25) when he was there to speak to members of two committees about what he called alleged overreach by the Department of Natural Resources.
The Michigan State Capitol has been a weapons-free zone since 2023.
The only exemptions are for lawmakers with concealed pistol licenses or law enforcement officers.
“Mr. Nugent was screened at the north entrance of the Capitol yesterday. The weapons detection system functioned correctly and alerted to a possible weapon; however, the trooper staffing the entry point did not see the alert until after Mr. Nugent left the screening area.
Upon completing his meeting, MSP personnel contacted Mr. Nugent and notified him of the weapons policy, and he complied.
We are still evaluating how the weapons detection alert was missed and will be following up to ensure this does not happen again."
Michigan State Police Director Shanon Banner
Michigan State Police confirmed to Local 4 that Nugent passed through security, and the weapons detection system worked properly.
However, the Trooper staffing the checkpoint did not see the alert.
Nugent was able to walk freely through the Capitol with his gun until police located him and confiscated the weapon.
The Michigan State Police said it is investigating the incident.
