DETROIT – Summer is one of the most challenging times to collect donated blood. Regular donors often go on vacation, and schools are not in session to hold blood drives.

If blood supplies run low, patients can be forced to wait for needed transfusions, which can be critical for surgeries and emergencies.
“Even though everybody else is taking a vacation during the summer, the need for blood doesn’t stop and doesn’t take a vacation,” said Dr. Courtney Lawrence, with the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross typically hits its lowest blood supply in late summer and early fall. To prevent shortages, the organization is urging donors to schedule a donation soon.
All blood types are needed, but type O is especially in high demand.
“It used to be thought that type O negative was the only blood type that could be given to people in an emergency, but we actually know that even O positive can be given safely to about 80% of the population who needs blood,” Dr. Lawrence explained.
To encourage summer donations, the Red Cross has partnered with the company Goodr. All blood donors from July 1 through July 14 will receive an exclusive pair of sunglasses while supplies last.
“They actually come with stickers that you can personalize with your blood type,” Lawrence said. “So, less than 3% of the American population chooses to donate blood every year. If you want to show off and be part of that proud percent, you have the opportunity to do so with these sunglasses in the first half of July.”
Donors are encouraged to give sooner rather than later to secure their sunglasses.
