1 teen dead, 1 in custody and suspect at large after shooting on Detroit’s east side -- What we know

Police officer injured

DETROIT – A manhunt is underway early Friday morning as Detroit police search for a suspect connected to a shooting on the city’s east side.

A 16-year-old is dead, an officer is recovering after being shot and another person has been detained.

Police were already working around the clock before this shooting as the department has been boosting its presence for the Fourth of July weekend.

Now, investigators are looking for who they’re calling a third suspect.

It began at around 10:30 p.m. On July 3, during a routine patrol. Police said they noticed three people near an abandoned building amid a recent surge in local disturbances. The police department said they detained one person while the other two ran away.

During the chase, police said a suspect reached for a handgun and shot an officer in the left hand. The officer returned fire, killing the suspect — a 16-year-old boy.

The other person that was detained is also 16 years old.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison urged the community to come forward with any information about the suspect still at large.

“If you know who the suspect is, please speak up. You can even call 911. We need to apprehend him as soon as possible,” Bettison said.

Bettison addressed concerns about youth involvement in violent crime, noting the suspects were violating curfew.

“Our kids should not be out at this time of night, and they should not have handguns,” Bettison said, calling on parents to take responsibility.

Police confirmed they recovered a handgun with an extended magazine. Michigan State Police are also helping find the suspect.
