Extreme heat prompts Washtenaw County to open cooling centers this weekend

Additional cooling sites are available throughout the county

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – Due to extreme temperatures, Washtenaw County has opened cooling sites from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6.

The locations include the Towner Human Services Building, located at 555 Towner St. in Ypsilanti, and the Learning Resource Center, situated at 4135 Washtenaw Ave. in Ann Arbor.

Additional cooling sites are available throughout the county.

A complete list, including addresses, contact information, and hours, is available on the Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development’s website.

All libraries and county buildings will be closed on Friday, July 4, in observance of the holiday.

County office building lobbies are also open as cooling sites, Monday through Friday, during regular business hours, except on July 4.

The list of sites may be updated throughout the summer.

During extreme heat, residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and limit sun exposure.
