DETROIT – Lauren Roberts, the author of the international best-selling novel “Powerless,” will be at Comerica Park on Tuesday, Aug. 5!
The stadium will be hosting its first annual Tigers Book Club Night, and Lauren will be there to throw out the first pitch of the game.

Tickets purchased for this special evening will include a limited-edition Tiger’s jersey inspired by “Powerless.” The jersey is white and purple, based on the purple in “Powerless’s” cover art. It has “Azer” written on the backside, which is the last name of the male protagonist, Prince Kai. The ticket also includes access to a pre-game Q&A with Lauren to talk about her books and a limited-edition cover of “Powerless” featuring the Tigers’ classic orange color.
“Powerless” is the first book in the bestselling YA fiction-fantasy trilogy by Michigan native, Lauren Roberts.
It takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Ilya and follows the protagonist, Paedyn. Paedyn is an “ordinary,” meaning a person without powers, pretending to be an “elite,” a person with powers in a kingdom where being an “ordinary” is considered a crime.
After posing all her life as an elite to survive, Paedyn is thrust into the Purging Trials after accidentally saving one of the Kingdom’s princes, Kai. The Purging Trials, a competition to showcase the powers of the Elites, test Paedyn’s skills as she fights for her life and to keep her ordinary status a secret. Set against this “Hunger Games” style of battle, the book also follows the enemies-to-lovers trope within Paedyn and Prince Kai’s relationship.
The first book was published in January of 2023, to be followed by “Reckless” published in July of 2024, and “Fearless” being released in April of 2025.
Two companion novellas that take place within the “Powerless” universe are also a part of the series. The first novella, “Powerful,” was released in April 2024, and the second novella, “Fearful,” is set to come out on Sept. 2, 2025.
