PORT HURON, Mich. – A teen has been arrested after stealing a car with a baby in the back seat in Port Huron.
“This was an extremely difficult situation for the deputies and the officers to be in, driving those speeds trying to resolve this situation as best they could,” said Port Huron Assistant police Chief Jeremy Young.
“We got a call from a frantic mother who says her vehicle was stolen,” Assistant Chief Young recalled.
The car was left running at a Port Huron gas station when the suspect, only a teenager, made the split-second decision to take off with the car, not knowing a baby was in the back sleeping.
Dash cam video shows the pulse-pounding moments the teenager weaves through oncoming traffic, before crashing into multiple parked vehicles.
Although only a teen, this isn’t the first time the suspect has had a run-in with the law.
“We are aware that he does have some criminal history that is concerning and similar to what happened last night,” Young said.
In the end, the mother was just happy to be reunited with her baby after the arrest. Luckily, it remained unharmed and safe throughout the entire ride.
“She was obviously emotional. She was extremely relieved. I can’t imagine what she had to be going through while that was taking place,” Young said.
The teen has yet to be officially arraigned.
Cops are also hoping this will serve as a reminder of why it’s not a good idea to leave your car running and unattended.
