‘He had a ball with life’: Victim in Taylor shooting was days away from 15th birthday

No suspects in custody

The family of the teen killed in a shooting in Taylor Saturday night (July 19) has identified him as 14-year-old Trey Kimber.

The shooting happened in the area of Eureka Road and Pine Street around 9 p.m. According to Taylor Police, the teen was in an argument with a group of three to four others before someone pulled out a gun.

No suspects have been arrested, but police said they have descriptions of the people involved.

Trey’s mother, Alexis Kimber, said her son was someone who lived life to the fullest and was a loving older brother to her 9-year-old daughter.

“He was just loving,” Kimber said. “He’s a great person to be around, great personality. He was just loved and his life got taken away too short.”

Kimber said she doesn’t know what led up to the shooting that ended her son’s life. She said she last saw Trey around 6 p.m on Saturday, when he told her he was going to a movie theater.

She’s now sharing a warning for other parents.

“Get more active in your kid’s phone,” Kimber said. “We try not to be so nosy and let them make their own decisions, but we just have to stay on top of our kids. Trouble is everywhere and it’s easy to get into.”

Trey was just days away from celebrating his 15th birthday, which would have been on August 2. He had recently graduated 8th grade at Grandport Academy and was set to start attending Ecorse High School in the fall.

“This is a profound loss to our school community,” Grandport Academy Principal Shannon Jenkins said in a social media post. Jenkins described Trey as a “bright, kind, and spirited young person who touched the lives of many.”

The school will provide grief counselors for students in need of mental health support beginning Monday.

“He had a ball with life, he lived life,” Kimber said. “I just want justice for my son.”
