Needle allegedly found in Halloween candy prompts police warning in Canton Township

Community shocked by potential candy tampering

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police in Canton Township are warning parents to be vigilant after a mother said she found a sewing needle inside her child’s Halloween candy.

In a Facebook post, police said the incident happened after the child went trick-or-treating in the area of Saltz Road and Sheldon Road.

Police say the child showed their mother a Twix candy bar with something sticking out of the wrapping, and when the mother opened it up, she found the needle stuck inside.

“At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident, but out of an abundance of caution, we want the community to be aware and vigilant,” the department wrote in the post.

Police urged anyone who comes across any candy that appears to be tampered with or suspicious to not eat it and simply discard it.

For neighbors who live in the area where the incident happened, the warning came as a shock.

“My kids have grown up in the neighborhood, and we’ve never had any issues with thinking that anything like that would be a problem, so it was very surprising,” said Jennifer Cooper.

The Canton Police Department said it takes these kinds of reports seriously and is working to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident. Parents like Cooper are hoping the incident was some kind of accident.

“You would just hope it’s not a true situation for these young kids who are still trying to do kid things and do innocent things, and this takes that away from them,” Cooper said.

Anyone who finds any object inside a piece of candy is asked to contact the Canton Police Department at 734-394-5400.
