‘Scouting for Food’ drive helps Macomb County families facing food insecurity

With many families worried about food benefits, local Scouts are stepping up to help

Macomb County is facing a serious challenge -- many residents don’t know where their next meal will come from.

To help address this, the Community Food Bank of Macomb County has partnered with Scouting America to collect donations and ensure no one goes hungry.

Food banks like the one in Macomb County depend on donations to feed the community.

Right now, they need help more than ever.

Linda Azar, division director at Macomb Community Action, said, “Hunger hurts, but giving is easy, so give generously.”

The donations make a real difference for people in need.

Merissa Pacholek, program manager at the Community Food Bank of Macomb, explained, “The donations are something that we can give out immediately. We get them in here, we sort them, we box them, and we give them to the pantries that need them the most.”

Here’s how the ‘Scouting for Food’ drive works:

Scouts drop off plastic bags on neighborhood porches for people to fill with non-perishable food.

Then, Scouts pick up the bags and deliver them to the food bank.

Teddy Wade, a Scout, said, “I just really want to help other people because they don’t have access to food, and it just feels wrong for that to happen. Everybody should have access to food.”

The drive comes at a critical time.

Many families across the state are worried about their food benefits, even though judges have ordered the Trump administration to fund SNAP payments during the government shutdown.

Linda Azar added, “In the meantime you’re talking about people who lost their benefits on the first. They’re in that predicament right now. They need food today. They need food tomorrow.”

Scouts request that you leave your filled bags on your porch by 9 a.m. next Saturday, Nov. 8.

If you didn’t receive a bag, donations can be dropped off at Weingartz on Van Dyke in Utica from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that same day.
