Key races in Metro Detroit in November 2025 election

Metro Detroiters will head to the polls on Tuesday to vote for their next mayor, city council members, and various proposals.

Here are some key races happening in Metro Detroit in the November 2025 election:

Detroit Mayor

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. won the August primary election and are the two candidates on the November ballot for Detroit’s next mayor.

Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced in 2024 that he would not seek re-election. Instead, he is running as an Independent candidate for Michigan’s next governor.

Hamtramck Mayor

The candidates running for Hamtramck mayor are Adam Alharbi and Muhith Mahmood.

According to Alharbi’s campaign website, he hopes to address resident concerns such as high water bills, street parking, road repairs, and property taxes. His other visions include fiscal responsibility, supporting small businesses, attracting visitors and celebrating diversity.

According to Mahmood’s campaign website, he hopes to bring together the city’s Bangladeshi, Yemeni, Polish and African American communities. His other visions include improving economic development, public safety and youth programs.

The seat for the city’s mayor opened up after former Mayor Amer Ghalib resigned as he was President Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. ambassador to Kuwait.

Hamtramck City Council

The candidates running for Hamtramck City Council are Nayeem L. Choudhury, Motahar Fadhel, Abdulmalik Kassim, Abu A. Musa, Yousuf Saed and Luqman Saleh. Voters can choose up to three candidates.

There have been some controversies surrounding the city council, including a city councilman who could face trial for allegedly forging absentee ballots in 2023.

An independent investigation was also launched, which uncovered allegations of misconduct. This led to the police chief, a city councilmember and the city manager resigning.

Dearborn Heights Mayor

Dearborn Heights City Council Chair Mo Baydoun and Dearborn Heights City Councilwoman Denise Malinowski Maxwell are the two candidates running for the city’s next mayor.

The seat for mayor was vacated after Mayor Bill Bazzi was confirmed as the ambassador to Tunisia. He resigned on Oct. 8.

According to Baydoun’s campaign website, he is a lifelong resident of the city and some of his visions include improving public safety and cleaner streets. He was sworn in as mayor pro tem for Dearborn Heights shortly after Bazzi resigned.

Maxwell was sworn in as interim mayor back in 2020 after former Mayor Dan Paletko died from COVID-19 complications. According to her campaign page on Facebook, her vision

Sterling Heights Mayor

The two candidates running for mayor are incumbent Michael C. Taylor and lifelong Sterling Heights resident Matthew Ryan.

Pontiac Mayor

The candidates running for Pontiac mayor are Pontiac City Council President Mike McGuinness and former council president Kermit Williams.

The race for mayor grew tense after offensive remarks about McGuiness were posted on social media.

Taylor Mayor

The candidates running for Taylor Mayor are former council member Herman Ramik and incumbent Tim Woolley.

According to his campaign website, Ramik, a Vietnam veteran, hopes to improve public safety and inclusive leadership.

Elected in 2021, Woolley, an Army veteran who served during Desert Storm, is the eighth man to serve as Taylor’s mayor. Prior to becoming mayor, he served on the city council for two years.
