Wildfires force 80% contained, evacuations lifted in northern Michigan county

Emergency personnel remained on scene and will continue operations until the fire is fully contained

OSCODA COUNTY, Mich. – Officials said the wildfire near Mapes Road in Oscoda County is now about 80% contained, and evacuation orders have been lifted, allowing residents to return home.

The Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office said conditions have improved enough for people to safely go back to their properties.

However, authorities are asking non-residents to stay away from the area to allow fire crews to continue their work safely and efficiently.

Emergency personnel remained on scene and will continue operations until the fire is fully contained.

Evacuations began earlier Monday (May 4) for residents along Camp 10 Road, where authorities urged people to move away from the river due to unsafe wildfire conditions.

Residents in the affected area were told to leave immediately and follow instructions from emergency crews.

A shelter was initially set up at the community center in Mio but was later moved to Tri-Point Church.

During the incident, officials said the sheriff’s office temporarily lost power and was unable to receive phone calls.

Service has since been restored.

Authorities said crews would remain active in the area to ensure public safety and will continue to provide updates.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local emergency channels for the latest information.
