MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Clintondale Community Schools said it will refund all purchased prom tickets as an investigation into a potential safety threat that led to the event’s cancellation remains ongoing.

In a letter sent to families on Friday (June 5), Interim Superintendent Kevin Knoblock said the district has spent the past several days exploring options following the cancellation of prom, but has determined that refunds are necessary because there is no timeline for the investigation’s conclusion.

“At this time, the tip that led to the cancellation remains under active investigation,” Knoblock said. “Until the investigation determines otherwise, the information is considered credible and is being treated with the utmost seriousness.”

The district canceled prom on June 2 after receiving an OK2SAY tip through the Michigan State Police about an hour before the event was scheduled to begin.

According to school officials, the tip suggested a student might bring a firearm to the dance and was categorized as a “Planned School Attack.”

After consulting with law enforcement, district administrators decided to cancel the event.

Because the investigation remains active, Knoblock said the district cannot determine whether or when a replacement event could be held.

Refunds will be issued by check, payable to the student who purchased the tickets.

The district said students will receive the full amount paid, and seniors will receive direct communication regarding the refund process.

“We recognize the significance of prom and understand the disappointment this situation has caused for our students and families,” Knoblock said. “The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community remain our highest priority.”

The investigation is being conducted by the district’s school resource officer and the Clinton Township Police Department.

Officials have not released additional details about the threat or identified any suspects.

Despite the ongoing investigation, graduation ceremonies for Clintondale High School seniors proceed as scheduled on Friday, June 5, 2026.

The commencement ceremony started at 4 p.m., with gates opening at 2:45 p.m.

School officials said enhanced security measures were in place, including increased police presence and security screening of all guests and belongings.

Admission was limited to ticketed guests, and families were encouraged to arrive early to allow time for screening.

Knoblock thanked students, families, and community members for their patience and support as the district continues to work with law enforcement.

“I appreciate the patience, understanding, and support of our community as we work to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Knoblock said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
