‘You made me look like an idiot’: New video shows chaotic end in stolen U-Haul chase in Macomb County

Jennifer Roe, 47, facing charges

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – New police body camera video obtained by Local 4 shows what deputies say was the chaotic end of a chase involving a stolen U-Haul in Macomb County.

“Stand her up a second. (Inaudible). There you go. Come on out. There you go,” before the driver, 47-year-old Jennifer Roe of Clinton Township, allegedly responds, “You made me look like an idiot. I knew how to drive.”

Let’s rewind.

At the beginning of the video, a deputy is heard asking, “You guys good?” as the scene, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said, began with the pursuit of Roe and ended with cutting her out of the U-haul that flipped on its side.

Deputies said Roe fled police in a stolen U-Haul before crashing in the middle of a Macomb County intersection. She’s seen on the bodycam video with deputies ordering, “Both hands up.”

Police received reports of the stolen U-Haul the morning of May 28 and began pursuing the vehicle after it was detected by a Flock camera in Clinton Township. The driver sped off when officers attempted a traffic stop, and police said they pursued the vehicle until it entered Mount Clemens.

After running a red light in Macomb Township, the U-Haul driver was struck by another vehicle, causing it to roll over.

Deputy: “Can you climb out on your own?”

Roe: “No, I can’t.”

The deputy responds, “OK. Well, we’re gonna get you out. Do you have any weapons on ya?” Roe replies, “No.” The deputy adds, “Don’t reach. Let’s see the other hand, darlin.”

At one point in the footage, you can see firefighters sawing the windshield glass off as deputies and first responders work to reach Roe, who appeared to be trapped. No injuries were reported, though in the video, Roe was saying she was hurt.

The sheriff’s office said another car hit the U-Haul, causing it to roll over. Thankfully, Roe was pulled out safely.

As she’s brought out, Roe is allegedly heard saying, “That was my van.” An officer responds, “Come over here for a second. Let me get you off the road.”

Later, Roe is allegedly heard saying, “I didn’t do nothing.” A deputy asks, “She got an ID on her at all? You got an ID?” Roe responds, “Yeah, I have an ID.” The deputy asks, “Where is it?” Roe answers, “In my purse.”

Roe continues, “So now I’m in a whole bunch of trouble because they wouldn’t listen to me. That whole company they snuck up on me.” A deputy asks, “Why didn’t you stop for the police cars?” Another voice asks, “Does she have a bag or anything?” Roe adds, “Because they were telling me I didn’t know how to drive.”

Roe has since been charged with fleeing, receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, and reckless driving. She faces five years in prison and is due in court for a competency hearing in July.
