ANN ARBOR – For the second time in recent weeks, the improper use of cleaning products at a residence has led to a dangerous chemical exposure incident requiring a hazmat team in Ann Arbor.

The Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to the Homestead Commons apartment complex around 10 p.m. on Thursday after receiving a call about a resident who fell ill following the suspected exposure.

Firefighters encountered a strong chemical odor throughout the apartment and an unconscious individual in the bathroom upon arrival, who they immediately removed from the hazardous environment for treatment. The patient was transported via ambulance to University of Michigan hospital in stable condition.

The Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Response Team was also dispatched to the scene to assist in ventilating the apartment and removing any remaining hazards.

The team determined that the exposure was a result of a resident mixing a toilet bowl cleaner containing hydrochloric acid with a bleach-based cleaner containing sodium hypochlorite — a combination that produces chlorine gas, a highly toxic substance that can cause serious injury or death.

Chlorine gas is particularly dangerous because it reacts with moisture in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, forming corrosive acids that can damage tissue and impair breathing. Even low concentrations can cause serious health effects, according to fire officials.

In a previous incident in the city, a spa treatment chemical was used to clean a residential floor, resulting in a hazardous condition.

Both incidents serve as a reminder that while many household cleaning products are safe when used as directed, mixing chemicals or using products for unintended purposes can create extremely dangerous situations.

Always be sure to read and follow manufacturer instructions, never mix cleaning products, and ensure adequate ventilation when using chemical cleaners.
