Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend is this weekend -- here’s what to know

Part of ‘Three Free’ weekend

If you needed an excuse to get out on the water, this weekend is it.

Michigan’s Summer Free Fishing Weekend is June 13 and 14. So what does that mean?

It means all fishing license fees are waived, and you can fish to your heart’s content without needing a permit or license.

This also applies to out-of-state visitors on both our inland waters and the Great Lakes.

And this year, it’s part of the “Three Free” weekend, when state parks and ORV trails are also free to use.

All fishing regulations still apply, so know the rules before you cast.

Just take a look at these numbers. Last year, more than 3 million fish were caught.

Walleye and yellow perch led the way for most fish caught. Lake Huron saw the most action, followed by Lake Michigan. And this weekend is your chance to add to those numbers, for free.

Cleyo Harris, a fisheries biologist with the Michigan DNR Fisheries Division, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the weekend.
