ECORSE, Mich – What began as an attempt to take down a group breaking into cars turned into a chaotic scene that could’ve been much worse.
The wild scene unfolded just before 5 a.m. when a Dodge Durango pulled up to the door at the Citgo gas station on Southfield Road.
The woman who was driving the SUV hops out and starts to walk inside when cops from the auto crimes task force swarm the vehicle and immediately tackle her inside the store.
Meanwhile, outside in the parking lot, one of the male passengers hops in the driver’s seat and attempts to take off as officers converge on the SUV.
The new driver put the truck in reverse as officers open the door. The open car door hits one officer, knocking him to the ground. A second officer fires into the fleeing SUV, hitting the driver as the car backs up.
The SUV narrowly missed hitting a gas pump, crashed into a pair of bushes, then took off up Southfield Rd.
The ensuing chase went into Southwest Detroit, where they were finally stopped near Woodmere and Fort St.
The officer was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover. The driver who was shot also had what were described as “non-life-threatening” injuries
The shooting investigation has been handed over to the Michigan State Police, and there is no word on any charges that could be handed down to the people in the SUV.
