DETROIT – Detroit’s Capitol Park neighborhood in the city’s downtown has a new local spot for Detroit-style pizza.
Unc’s Pizza, located at 1133 Griswold Street, officially opens for business on Tuesday on the first floor of the historic Detroit & Northern Building.
A collaboration from Dime Store owners Larry Kahn, Ann-Marie Murphy and Jeff Alexander, and Tony Sacco of Mootz Pizzeria + Bar, the restaurant will offer up traditional fare like mozzarella sticks, chicken wings and tenders alongside it’s pizza offerings, while also leaving room for “creative license.”
“There’s incredible pride in Detroit-style pizza and demand for a place that really celebrates it,” said Sacco. “We took our time getting it right while having some fun.”
The eatery was named in honor of Kahn’s Uncle Paul, a World War II veteran and longtime Detroit Edison employee who Kahn says embodied the warm, neighborly spirit that inspired the concept.
“We wanted to create the neighborhood pizza place we all wish still existed,” Kahn said. “The kind of place where everyone feels welcome, families stay awhile and another chair is pulled up to the table.”
The 7,300-square-foot space was rehabilitated by Detroit-based RKP Group, featuring a nostalgic interior with 80 indoor seats and an outdoor patio that seats 50. Executive chefs Andrew Shedden and Josh Taylor will lead the kitchen.
Unc’s Pizza will be open Sunday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight.
