According to the American Cancer Society, more than 21,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. An estimated 12,000 will die from it.
It is the second most common gynecologic cancer in the country, and it has the highest death rate of any gynecologic cancer. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women, behind only lung and breast cancer.
And, when women are diagnosed, it’s often at an advanced stage. Why? Because there is no early detection test for this cancer.
The death rate has dropped in recent years, thanks to better treatment and awareness. But experts say there is still a lot more work to do.
Megan Neubauer, the executive director of the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance, joined Local 4 Live to help us understand what women need to know and what is being done in Michigan.
