DETROIT – Detroit City Council members Monday morning unveiled four proposals on how the city could be divided into local districts.
The changes would be made in time for the next election.
A new Detroit city charter was passed in November, prompting the proposals for changes to the districts. The charter requires City Council members to be elected by district instead of at large.
The proposals call for at least four changes, which are not final, to be made to the district maps in Detroit. The city would be divided into seven City Council districts.
City Council members said they followed this criteria when drawing their proposals:
1. To makes sure there would be representation from actual districts
2. Districts must be balanced in terms of population
3. City Council members may have to relocate
4. There likely will be more diversity on City Council
Some existing and prospective City Council members would have to move by 2013 if they want to run for the election.
Public hearings will be held on the City Council proposals.
