Students' artwork vandalized at Detroit's Peck Park

Detroit's College for Creative Studies hopes to restore damaged, vandalized artwork at Peck Park

DETROIT – Students from the U.S. and Canada collaborated to build a tribute to Detroit at one of it's Midtown parks.

The bridge, called "Connections," was given to the city for its 300th birthday from the College of Creative Studies. It sits in Peck Park which is right across the street from the art college.

"It's kids' work, you know, they worked hard on this," said Mikel Bersee, of CCS.

Bersee led the project which involved high school students from Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The bridge was displayed in Canada first, then at its permanent home in Detroit.

Several pieces of art were taken or damaged over the weekend.

" ... to just smash the glass pieces and the artwork indiscriminately, for no reason ... it's difficult," Bersee said.

Copper and metal were stolen from the artwork.

"It means more to us than what you're going to get out of that scrap," Bersee said.

Bersee said with help Connections can be restored to its original symbol of pride and peace.

"We'll take a look and see if we can't do a kind of fixer-up," he said.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department.

Call the College for Creative Studies for information on how to help restore the bridge artwork.
