DETROIT – A 24-year-old man is dead and his 4-year-old son is hurt after a shooting Saturday afternoon on Detroit's northwest side, police said.
It happened around 4:55 p.m. in the 18300 block of Monica Street.
Police said the man was outside with his son when a dark Chevrolet SUV pulled up at the intersection of Pickford Avenue and Monica Street.
One man got out of the vehicle armed with a rifle with a mask covering his face. Police said the gunman first fired at the 4-year-old boy. A bullet grazed the child in the leg.
The gunman then fired at the father, who tried to protect his son. A neighbor came out, grabbed the child and brought him inside the house.
Police said the father had just purchased a bike for his son and was teaching him how to ride when the shooting happened.
The father and son were rushed to a hospital. Police said the father was pronounced dead at the hospital. The child is expected to survive.
No arrests have been made.
