DETROIT – Meijer opened the doors Thursday morning to its first store in Detroit.
The 200,000-square-foot store is the anchor of the Gateway Marketplace, a development at the site of the old State Fairgrounds site at 8 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.
This new store opening comes just days after the city filed for bankruptcy, but the $72 million shopping plaza is expected to bring 900 jobs.
Detroit police will have their own post inside the store.
Earlier this year, Whole Foods opened a store in Midtown.
