Michigan police: Driver traveling wrong way in deadly I-275 crash had open alcohol in vehicle

Man, woman killed by vehicle traveling wrong way on interstate

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man who drove a vehicle into oncoming traffic Tuesday morning on I-275, hitting and killing two people in another vehicle, had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, Michigan State Police said. 

A man and a woman were killed when their vehicle was struck in the northbound lanes of I-275 near Palmer Road in Canton Township. State police said their vehicle was struck by another vehicle traveling the wrong way on the interstate. The 59-year-old man driving that vehicle was transported to a hospital. His condition is not known at this time. 

The northbound lanes of I-275 were shut down at Michigan Avenue.

State police said the wrong-way driver is a 59-year-old man from Wolverine Lake, Mich. An open container of alcohol was found inside his vehicle. 

An investigation into what caused the wrong-way crash continues.
