Michigan road conditions improve between 2015-16, data shows

Percentage of roads considered poor rose slightly

The percentage of roads considered to be in good condition rose between 2015 and 2016.

The percentage of miles of Michigan roads considered to be in good condition jumped nearly 2 percent between 2015 and 2016, according to data from the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council.

In 2016, 18.04 percent of federally funded road lane miles were categorized as good, compared with 16.30 percent in 2015.

Roads in good condition may require routine maintenance such as crack sealing and minor patching.

The amount of roads in fair condition fell from last year; in 2015, 44.48 percent of lane miles were considered fair, while 42.64 were categorized the same in 2016.

Fair roads need preventive maintenance, such as crack sealing and patching, surface treatment, non-structural overlay and concrete joint repair.

The number of miles considered to be poor in the state rose slightly. In 2015, 39.22 percent of lane miles were poor, while 39.31 percent were in 2016.

Roads in poor condition need to be rehabbed or reconstructed. That can include resurfacing, structural overlays, replacement of concrete slabs or complete reconstruction of the road.

The amount of bridges in good condition fell between 2015 and 2016, while the number in poor condition also decreased for the same period.

In 2015, 4,647 bridges were classified as good; 4,584 bridges were good in 2016.

There were 1,127 bridges considered to be poor in 2016, down from 1,182 in 2015.

The number of bridges in fair condition rose, with 5,225 being considered fair in 2015 and 5,363 classified as such in 2016.
